Being Single….

The two needles of Q and Q watch were moving like the march of ant which have neither desire to reach the destiny nor choice to stop. Seema realized that the day had crept away with no changes in her life. She unwontedly admitted that Pritam wouldn’t return at any cost.

Seema, sway away her curls from her forehead and closed her eyes. At the age of 22, Seema was still beautiful as when she was married at 18 with few lines conquered beneath her eyes representing the struggle to survive. Before few months, she used to have few girlish desires as any other women of 22 have. When she gave birth to her first child as a girl seven months before, she thought she was never happy. She felt the real pleasure of enjoying her womanhood; the proud ness of being a woman and a mother at the same time.

Pritam and Seema were married four years ago with the fact that they would learn to love each other. As the consequence of their marriage, they were happy to share the bond and were attached to each other immediately. Despite of variation in their lifestyles, choices of music, foods and moods, they learnt to respect each other. Truly, they supported each other in every reasons, points and aspects of life.

Pritam, worked as a teacher in a neighborhood college of their town which was far away from the capital, earned satisfactorily to survive his mother and his family. Seema as a house wife never disappointed her mother-in-law instead she considered herself to be luck enough to have an elderly support. Seema as the only child of her educated parents brought wisdom and knowledge in Pritam’s house. She believed in simplicity, determination and had assured herself that she would be further studying as Pritam encouraged her to take a job.

In presence of load shedding in Kathmandu Valley, thousands and thousands of candles burnt their soul to lighten the atmosphere. Seema thought what if she burnt like a candle.

Alas! If she could….then she thought of ‘Priya!’ her only child; her gift to Pritam. She then badly missed Priya, who was living with her grandparents. Seema closed her empty eyes with no liquors inside.

The day when Pritam had called from Kathmandu to give good news of his new job, she was so excited that she nearly cried. That day only she organized everything and packed clothes of her mother-in-law, hers and Priya’s. It had been decided that Pritam was coming back to accompany them to the capital, the city of dreams. Seema thought their life was going to change for better and how much Pritam means for her.

Seema in dismay was waiting for Pritam to back home who was supposed to come early in the morning. When the telephone rang she thought that she couldn’t speak……..she heard her mother-in-law murmuring in a faint voice…..she heard somebody mentioned about accident……and Pritam’s death!!!!!!!!

When she woke up it was already four days since that telephone was received. At first she couldn’t think about anything………. Rampantly she was asking too herself “How could that happened?”

Her loving husband ‘Pritam’ died in a bus accident, it was her husband only who died in that accident. Seema thought she would die or cut into pieces. She thought no point to live…..for few days she forgot about ‘Priya’. After few days of rituals, she wondered about her presence but as each day passes by the more she thought about Priya.

Having such turmoil in her life, when she looked at the mirror for the first time after two months she hardly recognized herself. She was as grey as a ghost with sunken eyes and hollow cheeks. The more she tried to forget about her husband’s absence, the more her white attire tortured her.

When she decided to live again for herself and Priya her mother-in-law was confused. Inspite of many objections Seema started to dress as before. The things she missed were ‘Sindhur’ and ‘Pote’ which were tribute to Pritam.

After Pritam’s death she turned herself as cold as a rock. She felt bad when her mother-in-law accused her being depraved just because she had wanted to live again. Despite of her parents many requests to stay with them she decided to live alone but left Priya for sometimes untill she settles. Seema felt remorseful for Pritam’s mother when she was thrown away from the will for the reason that Pritam’s child was not a boy. Seema decided to fight for her right which was either her fortitude or the greed to secure Priya’s future for which she was given of theone third of property.

With the support from her parents she applied for job at Capital and took up her studies again. Far away from her daughter, Seema always thought about possible ways to bring Priya to live with her. She felt the urge to embrace, care and kiss her innocent daughter.

When people ogle her in her colorful dresses, she breathes heavily inside that burns her soul. And when girls at her age mistaken for her freedom she reflects a matured smile. She has a freedom to live alone which was definitely not her choice. And when her well-wishers ask her to get married again, she felt a stab in her stomach, left with no words and she badly misses Pritam.

Being single and reviving her puzzled life with shattered dreams were not what she had wanted in her life but it was a fact that each day she was living with for Priya and herself.

Being Single…
Lost in sea of grief
Searching for that tranquility,
Which would never exist…
With the solitude soul
With no choice left to claim
Empty eyes and blur past
Guided to led life again
Being single…

This story is dedicated to many known and unknown women like Seema……….for their struggle to live alone.

Converse [All Star]

Converse the great shoes…
1908–1941: The Early Days and Chuck Taylor

In his late 30′s, Marquis M. Converse, who was previously a respected manager at a footwear manufacturing firm, opened the Converse Rubber Shoe Company (also known as the Boston Rubber Shoe Company) in Malden, Massachusetts in 1908. The company was a rubber shoe manufacturer, providing winterized rubber soled footwear for men, women, and children. By 1910, Converse was producing 4,000 shoes daily, but it wasn’t until 1915 that the company began manufacturing athletic shoes for tennis. The company’s main turning point came in 1917 when the Converse All-Star basketball shoe was introduced. This was a real innovation at the time, considering the sport was only 25 years old. Then in 1921, a basketball player named Charles H. “Chuck” Taylor walked into Converse complaining of sore feet. Converse gave him a job. He worked as a salesman and ambassador, promoting the shoes around the United States, and in 1923 after publishing a retrospective on the first 60 years of basketball and teaching his first basketball clinic at North Carolina State University, his signature was added to the All Star patch. He tirelessly continued this work until shortly before his death in 1969. Converse also customized shoes for the New York Renaissance (the “Rens”), basketball’s first all African American pro basketball team.

Chuck Taylor has developed a great shoe with great design. This time I have bought converse shown below… it’s good, isn’t it ? And for showing up my new shoes to you all I came up with following graphical effects…by the way that’s my feet. So, howz it?

Rafting @ Trisuli

Up and Down in the raft
Flying above the water
paddling in the air
with all the strength.
As Enthusiasm and energy
were swept away and
Rejuvenated again and again
By a splash

Splash of water, splash of life, peace and tranquility
with the openness and
Desire to struggle in rapids of mysteries
They were,
“Upstream, surprise
Twin Rock and Ladies delight”

No longer were Rapids as stranger..
Satisfied and tired, I was breathing and happy

Certainly,
I lived few hours in my life
The way I wanted.

Poem & Report Written By: Deepti [ Special thanks to DeepTea :) ]

That was indeed a rocking time!!! A Rafting Program was organized at Trishuli River on 2nd June 2007, by YATRA to commemorate World Environment Day 2007 (June 5). This year the theme of the Environment Day was “Is Melting Ice: A hot Topic?” It took us around 3-4 hours a long and awaited journey in bus to feel the excitement.

There were 61 youth who rafted tirelessly to 20-25 km through the river. The river is 141 km long and is popular for the rafting experiences with interesting rapids. The river has been graded +3 on international ratings, whereas 1 being the swimming pool. This grading of Trishuli denotes that for trained guide- technical persons are needed and the river is full of excitements and interesting rapids.

The rafting followed by the instruction given by the Guides, who patiently instructed the paddling mechanism as such; Forward, Backward, All Back and Finally Sssssssstopppp…The last instruction was the most fabulous one for all the rafters.

When the raft comes through the rapids it was the most exciting and thrilling moments we ever had. We came across many rapids, mild to violent one; some of them were Ladies Delight, Upset I & II, Surprise, Electricity, Twin Rock and many more.

We swam and floated at the safer place and were hilarious picked up inside the raft again by the instructor or even our friends by pulling our life jacket, as if we were a sack of grain. After 3 and more hours of stimulation inside water, we were exhausted and tired but yet not satisfied. We had lunch with no complains (tired to complain) and relaxed in the sun for sometime.

We had group photos and we realized to be responsible to keep our surrounding and environment clean and conserved. We committed to care about our environment by sustainable consumption.

Then we were again back to bus with tired bones and a heart full of blood of excitements. It did not take a single second to make me realize that ‘Nepal: a country of Nature and Adventures ’.

Hike to Champadevi

On 21st April we climbed the Champadevi, the second highest hill of Kathmandu valley, after Pholchowki. Most thrilling and rough hike I ever had. We were in the no-man’s-land, no specific trail. It was kind of finding your own way, no route……….. It was a gully, formed due to rain, where we walked, very fragile land. The Villagers were amazed to hear about the route we traveled. Our bad luck we couldn’t find the actual way, which was there, according to the villagers.

Pranab, one of our team members, was experienced hiker, so he did very appreciable job to find the hidden routes. He made way for us. Thank you Pranab, without you we couldn’t have made it.

We experienced a great team work. Each one of us was helping other, pulling and pushing and counseling. We were all wounded, big rock crashed in my leg, even though I tolerated. Some had scratch on their checks, some on arms, legs,…….. Leech sucked liters of blood.

Though it was one of the hardest days of their life and every one with empty stomach, only a cup of tea inside, they were not complaining, I am so pleased with everyone, especially girls. We were supposed to have breakfast in the mid-way, but there were no enough space, so we didn’t have. We traveled whole way without having anything, brave us. Because of terror we forgot hunger.

In about three hours stiff walk, we reached the top, we enjoyed sooooo. I took one of the longest breaths of relief, of my entire life. Some times during climbing, I was almost hopeless. However, being a senior among the group members, I need to act strong and determined, I bear that responsibility.

After facing lots of struggle we reached our destination. There exists temple at the top of the hill. Though we find very pleasant environment, one thing disappointed us, pollution. Why we Nepalese are so undisciplined? Rubbish around the temple? So disgusting………. Seems, we worship god just to show others. People don’t even respect god, so what we can expect from them?

However, we were apart from general Nepalese because we didn’t left our waste there.
After all good and rough moment finally we had our lunch, on the top of the hill, amazing experience. After having food we returned to the base following good trails.

We faced another difficulty when we reached base. There was no local transportation due to strike. So we took lift, a water tanker. We climbed the tanker, it was another exciting experience.

Finally we were back without not much trouble and accident. Anything could have happened that day, god saved us, thank you god and thank you everyone.

Sometimes you read something & it makes you stop & think…

There was a blind girl who hated herself just because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She said that if she could only see the world , she would marry her boyfriend.

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her and then she could see everything, including her boyfriend. Her boyfriend asked her, “now that you can see the world, will you marry me?”

The girl was shocked when she saw that her boyfriend was blind too, and refused to marry him. Her boyfriend walked away in tears, and later wrote a letter to her saying. “JUST TAKE CARE OF MY EYES PLEASE”.

This is how humans change when their status changes. Only few remember what life was before, and who has always been there in the most painful situations.

Book enlightens

I don’t usually read books, this is one of my weak points. Self realization is the first step for positive living, therefore I realized my weak point and started to improve it.

Finally I started reading… The last book I read was The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Mr. Robin Sharma. It took me almost one week to read that book, indeed very slow.

It was one of the best books I have ever read. I was so much inspired by his writing, that I gifted the book to my close friend. It was my pleasure to receive another book from the same writer as a gift, Family Wisdom. It was nice exchange of knowledge.

I have shared learning from the book with my friends, and enjoyed doing so. I guess this book is the Must read, especially to those, who really want to improve themselves.

Though I wanted to read books but wasn’t doing so. My close friend used to suggest me to do so, but I was ignoring a lot . Now I realized, that I didn’t get the book of my interest. Finally, I got the kind of book that I always like to read. I will be in the search for such books and start to improve myself from now onwards.

I gifted “Sooach” a Nepali book written by Mr. Karna Shakya, to my family on the occasion of New Year. The book is all about an idea to work for betterment of society and start from family. My mother has started reading it, I am so glad and I also want my father to read it.

We need to improve our thinking and behavior, if we really want to see the positive change in our society and country. Start reading and start improving yourself. I bet …Book enlightens.

Caving Chovar

It was a hot sunny Saturday on 24 March when gwara (Siddhartha) called me and asked about the Saturday plan. Last week we talked about going to Chhovar (Manjushree) cave on the weekend but had not decided anything. Amar would be unavailable due to his personal commitment at home and Sontosh was unsure. But gwara, shyam and I became ready to explore the cave. Oweing to petrol shortage, we decided to go by bus. After short wait at Teku under scorching heat, we rode on Dakhshinkali Express at 12.30 PM. The so called Express really tested our patience as it took almost half an hour to travel mere 5KM distance. Gwara was getting more restless as he had meeting to attend at JALTAN (something related to Japanese language) at 3.00 PM. We reached there at 1.00 PM.

Though that place was not unfamiliar to us we had never been around cave site earlier. The cave lies in the gorge believed to be formed by Manjushree. We were about to descend towards the cave when we were stopped by a lady, accompanied by two men and some playing children, who told we need to need to buy ticket, priced Rs 10 each. That was much cheaper than we expected but we were misunderstood. The ticket was only to reach to the opening of the cave. To walk through the cave, we were offered three different schemes with price ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 150 per person. The cheapest being the shortest route, about 15/20 minutes, and pricey being the longest, about 60 minutes. We chose the intermediate one worth Rs 100 that lasts about 30 minutes. We felt the rate is overpriced as we were neither shown printed rate specs nor provided payment receipt. We would get a guide to accompany us. We filled a disclaimer form and were ready to venture. Shyam asked some funny and wise questions (like if there are any wild animals inside cave, if there is complementary drink with the ticket, if there is enough light inside etc) to them in his usual andaaz.

Actually, we had no idea about how the cave would be. I stupidly thought of it as being Mahendra cave at Pokhara, where we could walk freely. So, I brought my bulky camera wishing to have some kind of photo session inside the cave. Gwara was attired in formal outfit as he had to make to his meeting later. Shyam was clad in white T-Shirt, well ironed pant and new leather shoe. Honestly, none of us were well prepared for caving.

When we saw the opening of the cave, where we were about to begin with, we could imagine how the journey would be. (I missed to take photographs of the cave opening and its surroundings.) We were given only two headlights, each carried by the guide and gwara. We then started descending through the opening, the guide led us followed by shyam, I and gwara, and once we were inside all I was thinking of how and when to get out of it. The inside of the cave is very interesting and not much difficult to conquer. So, its pretty safe unless you slip or bang your head on sharp pointed rocks. There is a lot of ascending and descending and in most of the places we had to crawl. In most places water is pouring through the rocks which made the rocks slippery. On the way we found a small pool of water which is named Mahadev Pokhari. There were many routes inside and it seems all routes have not been explored yet. Without guide, it was almost impossible for us to get out. Gwara was worried throughout thinking if he would get through the narrow passes. Shyam was walking with great concentration with his slippery shoes against the slippery rocks. I was much disturbed by my bulky camera as I had to concentrate more on protecting it more than myself. Besides, I had not been able to take snaps inside. However, we managed to take it out a couple of times and took some photographs inside. After Hassle tussle against the mud and rocks for more than 30 minutes we were finally out, to much to our delight and satisfaction.

We then realized that we had made the mess of our cloths. We had mud stains all over it. We were feeling odd to return in such condition and Gwara could no way attend the meeting with those cloths. However, to our disbelief and surprise, we could hardly find any distinct stain on Shyam’s cloths. One can imagine how hard he might have struggled to walk only with his feet and protect his cloths while we were crawling and creeping most often. As gwara was getting annoyingly hurried for his meeting, we had to return right back, again in Dakhshinkali Express.

In the end, it was a very memorable experience. We could have enjoyed much better had we were a bit prepared. We felt we lacked enough light and helmets which is very essential. We later realized that we had to bring small point and shoot cameras and extra set of cloth. We missed Pakam and Anil a lot as they would surely enjoy such adventures. I wondering how Amar or Santosh would react had they been with us, as I can still remember Amar’s expressions during rafting at Trishuli.
